PostSubject: Frequently Asked Questions For Newbies & Guests   Frequently Asked Questions For Newbies & Guests EmptyMon Mar 31, 2008 9:18 pm

Here are a few sample questions and answers I have provided for those who are curious:

Q. As a Guest can I post in any of the sections? Or can I only view and read certain sections and topics?

A. There is at least one section you can post in and that would be 'The Shop Front' located in the Bazar near the bottom of the forums. Unfortunately that is the only section you can post in. Unless my members suggest to me otherwise as to letting guests comment on our topics/etc I'm afraid the rest will be an exclusive priviledge for members only.

Q. When creating a username is there any criteria I should follow?

A. Not especially but I do suggest it be a username that is appropriate and tasteful. UrM0m would not be an appropriate or tasteful name and most likely you'd get a lot of flack for such a name, considering it doesn't sound especially mature/grown-up. Likewise any kind of entertainment oriented names (T.V., anime, Video games) are fine, but until we get to know you, you could raise a few eyebrows with those. Remember an explanation why you chose the username you have in your intro might be appropriate in this case. Everyone has to start somewhere and should always be allowed the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves. Happy username hunting! Wink

Q. Is there an age limit?

A. Yes; you must be at least 15 years of age to join the forums. The age limit is 99 however I ask that you please do not lie about your age if you can help it. This does not provide any of the admins an idea as to how old our members are. Granted with age does not necessarily come maturity, but it is nice to know that our members are the proper age to be participating on our forum. Additionally, you'll get less raised eyebrows, by this I mean if you set your age to '99' don't expect not to get funny looks from people or rather be suspected of being up to no good if you will.

Q. All right, I submitted an account. On average how long do I have to wait before my account is offically activated and I can use it?

A. On average I typically check my e-mail every 1-3 days, so it should be within a reasonable amount of time.

Q. Is it okay for me to post my e-mail address on the site?

A. I would say so, however keep in mind that some of our forums are open to public viewing. Be sure you check which ones those are and if you are planning on posting your e-mail in one of these be sure you use something like the actual word 'AT' in place of an '@' symbol so that search engine bots don't scoop your e-mail up and send you spam you don't need.

Q. Which of the forums are open to public viewing?

A. Sign out and find out silly! You can best tell which forums are viewable by the public if you are signed out and scan (with your eyes mind you) the forums that way.

Q. As a Member of the forum, is it okay for me to lurk?

A. Yes you may, although it is prudent to post at least within a month otherwise your account could be next on the admins pruning list for non-active users. So just be careful how long you decide you shall be lurking in the shadows.

Q. What is Lurking? Or what is a Lurker?

A. A Lurker is a person who decides to stay out of the spotlight. They typically hide in the shadows until they feel ready to respond to something or someone. They typically will not post often and if they do they might post once or twice a month or so.

Q. What is a Troll?

A: Trolls are those people who go out of their way to push any and all buttons they can of the other members on forums and such. They will stop at nothing in attempts to ban other users, insight flame wars, or anything else that would contribute some form of chaos to our world.

Q. Who or What is a Fluffster? It sounds like passing gas or something, haha!

A. When it comes to fluffsters it is a very serious matter. Fluffsters are those who think what we believe on our forums is a game and they think they can join in by pretending to be something they are not. They will typically make outrageous claims such as, "Hi, I'm so and so and I'm a Goddess or God. I have all sorts of neat powers one of which is I can teleport. Oh don't worry I don't expect anyone to bow down to me or anything Wink". People can get themselves out of this sort of trouble if they are very specific in their posts about who and what they are.
Example: Hello my name is (insert random name) and I am a (insert type of kin here). In this particular lifetime humans gave me the title of Goddess and I don't expect anyone to refer to me as such, but since it is in my username I thought I would explain".
See? easy enough right?

Q. What are Flame Wars?

A. Flame wars are typically begun by two or more people in-sighting one another on certain topics they care about or that matter deeply to them. Typically it's more or less about how one strongly disagrees with the other and thus the war begins. Sometimes those who start these wars are indeed Trolls and they will be dealt with accordingly.

Q. What should I do if I suspect someone is a Troll or Fluffster?

A. Simple enough, report them to a Mod or Admin. And if we are lucky and our forums come with a 'Report user' button that would help the process as well. Also if the Admins or Mods are not aware as to what the offense is you should provide information explaining your reasoning.

Q. I'm new and I'd like to know what I should do first.

A. Well my friend there is a very simple answer for that. We have an introductions section called 'The Meadow of New Growth'. It would be best if you posted there first, but be sure to read the rules for that section as well...least if you still feel you don't have that good of a grasp yet on what you can and can't do around here.

Q. I was Banned! But what should I do in case I want to come back?

A. Granted I'm not sure how many people will need the answer to this question, but lets go ahead and answer it anyway. If you were banned think about your '3 strikes'. For what reason did you receive them? Consider the words/advice given to you by the mods and admins, were they correct in their actions? If so and you still want to come back, I would suggest come back/create a new account and post in the introductions again. Admit you were banned and that either you understand the reasoning for which you were banned and give everyone a formal apology. That may seem a little embarrassing, but I do feel you will find that you will have learned something very valuable from these actions.
Here are a few quotes for thought:
"I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.” Mahatma Gandhi

"We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility.” Rabindranath Tagore

"Humility makes great men twice honorable”. Benjamin Franklin

Q. What if I feel a Mod or Admin has wrongfully accused me of something that resulted in a warning or banning?

A. If this may have happened get in touch with me and I will take care of things. I will want to know what the supposed offense was (and possibly the post and/or topic in which resulted in said warning/banning) and need the name of the Mod or Admin who issued the warning. I will then talk with them to see if their reasons are still justified.

Q. I think my account was deleted, what should I do if I want to still be a part of the community?

A. Well it would be best to think about why your account may have been deleted first and foremost. Were you a fairly active user? Could you have done something recently to warrent a banning? Are you going to be more active the next time in case you weren't? Once you know the answer to all those questions, then proceed to either get in touch with myself or one of the other Admins or create a new account.

Q. "The Grove of the Ancients," hey isn't that the name of one of the places in World of Warcraft? And if so, is that where you got the idea for the name?

A. Why indeed it is the name of a place in WoW (knowing this because I've played WoW and visited there often enough with new characters and such). However, the name was given to the forum long before WoW even existed. That might be hard to believe but allow me to take you back in time and give you a brief history of the 'Grove'. The Grove was originally hosted on Bravenet, taking advantage of their free forum services at the time. Unfortunately things did not pan out and I temporarily gave up (it's hard when some of your friends don't really have your back). I still loved the name and hoped one day I might be able to revive it and make the idea of it work. Low and behold a few short years later (and in this time WoW had finally been released) and after rejoining an old Otherkin forum I decided to give this another shot, thanks mostly in part due to my beloved (Lunasin).
But in case I need to do so, I will C.M.A. now. I do not in any way, shape, or form own World of Warcraft. WoW is a trademark of Blizzard and all WoW related stuff belongs to Blizzard. I hope that Blizzard would allow me to continue using the name that I am for my forum since the name was largely based off of Celtic related origins then Warcraft. Thank you.
