PostSubject: Alphabet of the Celts/Druids   Mon May 11, 2009 6:22 pm

Some historians and non-historians will argue that the Celts/Druids have no alphabet what-so-ever. However in some of the research I have done on my ancestory I have found that they did use this but mostly maybe stringing leaves together, carving the letters into rocks, wood, wands, etc. if you haven't seen this alphabet before I have a link to a sample, though I've seen the alphabet have more then the letters offered through this site. Ogham is the name of the alphabet for it was named after Ogma (Webtv.net, Godchecker.com, Pantheon.org) the Celtic god of eloquence, healing, among other things who invented it.

Yes. They either wrote right to left, vice versa, or up and down, or rather down and back up much like Asiatic cultures do with their Kanji. Course this has me thinking. If Ogma was the one who created the language originally (by the Celts beliefs) then when abouts can we guess that he existed. He would have existed around the same time period as the Tuatha Dé Danann since he was considered one of their champions. Pin pointing when abouts he was plus if we are to assume he was the creator of the alphabet perhaps it can be safe to assume that indeed not only the Celts but the Druids as well knew a reading and writing system of some form. Course that wouldn't be considered hard evidence. Most skeptics would treat that as circumstantial evidence if not just myth all together. But there is nothing that states Ogma did not live upon this Earth sometime ago as well as there is no real evidence, except legends, as to the existence of the Tuatha Dé Danann. *grins* Hey Twilight I think I just gave you a lead on something, maybe even myself.

you have indeed! O.O i was speculating how Oghma's invention of the language and teh Celtic Druids' use of it could be a clear defining link between the bloodlines of the Tuatha, but the most i could think of was that the Druids were go-betweens for the Celts and Tuatha. same as priests are go-betweens for mortals and gods in other cultures.

Well after the Celts conquered/won their battle with the Tuatha there was inter-racial mingling (marrying into their culture, yadda, yadda). If that is so the Tuatha you can be sure taught their children and most likely their tribe, whoever was willing to listen and learn, to read and write this "Tree Alphabet".

it can only be speculated realy, since after all plenty of cultures describe themselves as needing to remain "pure" .... though than again in the Celts' case it is different. they do have plenty of stories in which the Fae are taken to bed by mortals.

Indeed and the Celts were rather promiscuous all things considered, least you get that impression when you read about some of their cultural habits. A woman who was not a virgin and had children was worth more to a Celtic man than a virgin.

huh, didn't realize that. o.o what i DID know, is that many group of people, such a sthe vikings and the goths and the celts, all were the kind of people to sleep with the men and women that they enslaved or became infatuated with from the lands that they invaded for resources.

I don't know about the Goths or Celts regarding that. For the Celts I guess I could kind of believe it, but I definitely know the Vikings practiced that.

Actually Twi, that is a bit of a generalist statement. The Celtic Tribes of Ireland, Scotland, and Britain did not have slaves. They didn't believe in it. If they had P.O.W.s they typically executed them in one of their rituals because it was seen as a great honor to participate in such a thing by the tribes standards, but to a foreigner it might just be seen as cruelty or something else.

Well you're looking at a woman who has been doing her fair share of historical reading on her Northern Celtic relatives as well as the southern European relatives. Plus I live with a walking 'History Text Book' who has done his fair share on the Celts, Goths, and Vikings. Smile I shouldn't be allowed to call myself Irish or Scottish if I haven't done some proper research on my ancestors. Wink
